HP’s Forward-Thinking Strategy for AI Devices
HP is on the brink of a transformative shift in the landscape of AI-enabled devices. As the demand for enhanced data privacy and security rises, the tech giant plans to reduce its reliance on cloud computing and remote data centers. This bold move aims to empower users with greater control over their data in an increasingly digital world.
Privacy Concerns at the Forefront
David McQuarrie, HP’s Chief Commercial Officer, emphasizes the importance of data sovereignty—essentially, the right for individuals and organizations to manage their own data. In a recent interview with Fortune, he noted, “In a world where sovereign data retention matters, people want to know that if they input data to a model, the model won’t train on their data.” This approach not only addresses growing privacy concerns but also positions HP as a leader in the AI hardware space.
The Rise of Local AI Models
McQuarrie pointed out a significant development in the evolution of AI devices: the emergence of smaller, local AI models. Unlike the expansive models that typically require cloud connectivity, these localized models serve small businesses and individual users effectively. “A company, a small business, or an individual has significant amounts of data that need not be put in the cloud,” McQuarrie remarked, highlighting the convenience and security of processing data directly on devices.
Navigating Global Data Regulations
The call for local data processing comes amid tightening regulations around data privacy, especially in various Asian countries. China has implemented stringent rules requiring that user data remains within its borders, while South Korea is following suit with its own mandates. Governments in the region are increasingly pushing for localized AI systems to enhance their technological independence, reducing reliance on foreign tech giants.
For instance, South Korea collaborates with local companies like Naver to develop its own AI technologies. Singapore is also investing in initiatives such as SEA-LION, aimed at facilitating language processing and other AI functions catered to Southeast Asian users.
Growing Market Dynamics in Asia
Despite being HP’s smallest market, Asia is demonstrating the fastest growth. In the fiscal year 2025, sales from Asia-Pacific and Japan surged by 7%, totaling $13.3 billion—a significant contribution to HP’s overall sales of $55.3 billion. This growth indicates a burgeoning market ripe for innovative AI solutions.
Given the region’s increasing comfort with technology, McQuarrie perceives an opportunity for disruptive change. While many executives voice enthusiasm about AI’s potential, practical implementation remains a challenge. A recent McKinsey survey indicated that two-thirds of companies are still in the testing stages of AI.
A Promising Future for AI Adoption
McQuarrie believes that the rate of AI adoption in Asia could surpass other global markets, attributing this to the region’s willingness to embrace technology. A Pew survey revealed that fewer respondents in countries like India, South Korea, and Japan expressed trepidation about AI compared to those in the United States.
To facilitate the growth of AI technologies, particularly AI PCs, HP is committed to ensuring seamless integration of AI features that enhance user experience without overwhelming users with the underlying technology. “What we’re doubling down on is the future of work,” McQuarrie stated. “A device that makes your experience better and your productivity greater. The fact that we’re using AI in the background? They don’t need to know that.”
By focusing on user-centric design and functionality, HP aims to lead the charge in making AI an indispensable part of everyday workflows, further solidifying its position in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
