The US-23 Flex Route project is making significant strides, with the goal of reopening ramps in a crucial section of Green Oak Township by Thanksgiving. This ambitious infrastructure endeavor aims to improve traffic flow and alleviate congestion, particularly during peak hours.

    Current Status of Construction

Michael Royalty, an engineer with ROWE Professional Services Company contracted by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), reported that the project is on track with major milestones already achieved. Currently, the focus is on the southernmost mile of the project, where work is progressing rapidly. If weather permits, the M-36 ramps are expected to reopen by the Thanksgiving holiday.

    Weather-Dependent Progress

One factor playing a critical role in the project’s timeline is the weather. Royalty emphasized that colder temperatures can delay processes such as concrete curing, which in turn affects the overall project schedule. As such, the project team is hopeful for favorable weather conditions in the coming weeks, aiming for completion before the holiday rush. In a worst-case scenario, they anticipate wrapping up work by the second week of December.

    Project Segments and Completion Timeline

The US-23 Flex Route initiative is segmented into four key areas. The northern three segments encompass approximately 6.5 miles of road, which are substantially complete, aside from some final touches like pavement markings and guardrail installation. Crews will return next year to finalize these items.

Looking ahead, Royalty stressed the importance of having the Flex Lane operational to help manage peak hour congestion by early June 2026.

Reopening of Ramps and Access Restoration

The reopening timeline for the northbound US-23 and M-36/9 Mile exit is currently under positive projection. Engineers anticipate that both M-36 ramps on the northbound side, along with M-36 itself, will reopen by Thanksgiving or shortly thereafter, which is a welcome development for motorists in the area. This move will restore normal access until the project resumes in Spring 2026.

Future Work Plans for Spring 2026

As we look to Spring 2026, the contractor will revisit the southernmost mile to place the final layer of asphalt on both sides of US-23. Additional construction tasks will include addressing punch list items such as finishing work on Whitmore Lake Road and undertaking landscaping activities, which were initially planned for the project.

    To recap key project milestones:

    • The northern 6.5 miles are effectively complete, pending minor upgrades.
    • The southern most mile aims to finish by Thanksgiving 2025.
    • Full project operations, including the Flex Lane, are expected to be completed by early June 2026.

By carefully monitoring weather conditions and adhering to their established timeline, the project team is dedicated to enhancing efficiency on US-23, ultimately providing a more seamless driving experience for all motorists.
