A Spectacle Like No Other: Highlights from the 2024 Key West Fantasy Fest Parade
The Key West Fantasy Fest Parade is an annual tradition that has transformed the vibrant streets of this Florida destination into a swirling canvas of color, creativity, and culture. In its 45th year, the 2024 edition embraced the theme “It’s a 90s NEON Cosmic Carnival!” and delivered an explosion of imagination, dazzling costumes, and unforgettable performances.
Celebrating Creative Expression
This year’s parade showcased nearly 50 entries, all vying for a share of the $20,000 prizes awarded across various categories. The creativity of the participants was on full display, reflecting the unique spirit of Key West—where art and celebration converge to create something truly extraordinary.
Grand Prize Winner: A Journey Through Time
Taking home the coveted Grand Prize for Best Overall was Jaimie Gwidt’s Key West Kreatives entry, “Flagler’s 1890s Fantasy.” This mesmerizing float transported viewers back in time, capturing the essence of the historical moments that shaped the island.

A Celebration of Entertainment
The Best in Entertainment award was claimed by Pamela Stephenson Connolly’s Key West International Dance Company for their electrifying performance titled “Cosmic Neon Lambada—90s and Forever!” This dynamic entry not only entertained but also served as a vibrant nod to the era that inspired many of the float themes.

Costumes That Captured Hearts
Costumes play a crucial role in Fantasy Fest, and this year was no exception. The Best Costume award went to Daniel Bitnar for “Cosmic Vortex,” showcasing a visually stunning and intricately designed outfit that captivated the audience.

Unique Interpretations of the Theme
The parade also awarded the Best Interpretation of Theme to the Lower Keys Fluffers with their creative entry titled “Fantasy Quest.” Embracing the cosmic carnival theme fully, this float illuminated the streets with an imaginative retelling of timeless narratives.

A Day for Everyone
Fantasy Fest isn’t just about the parade; the festivities continue throughout the week with an array of events. The final day featured several activities designed for all ages, including Children’s Day at Bayview Park, a “Fantasy Pickleball Tournament” at Higgs Beach Courts, and lively pool parties at local resorts.
Looking Ahead: 2025’s Enchanting Theme
As one festival closes another begins to take shape. The theme for the upcoming 2025 celebration is “Bedtime Stories & Magical Monsters,” generating excitement for fantastical twists on beloved tales and new takes on mythical creatures. Ellen LaMoia of Key West earned special recognition for her suggestion of this enchanting theme, ensuring a spot among the judges for next year’s parade.
